The Cup

Is the cup half full or half empty?

As a child I was taught:
The optimist sees it half full;
the pessimist sees it half empty.

As a child I thought:
Am I trying to fill it?
Am I trying to drain it?
Is it a favorite drink?
Is it bitter medicine I have to take?

As an adult I hear:
The optimist sees the cup half full;
the pessimist sees the cup half empty.

As an adult I fear
that simple answers
obscure complex questions.
